A capacity crowd traveled from Downtown Austin to the Ghost Town of Luck Texas to watch Willie Nelson, his family, and a carefully curated slate of musicians celebrate the fourth annual Heartbreaker Banquet on Thursday March 19, 2015. Held as a benefit, the mini-festival gave the musicians and audience a chance to experience the beautiful Texas Hill Country, listen to an excellent line-up, and drink in a Wild West saloon.
Originally build as a film set for the 1986 film, Red Headed Stranger, Willie had to rebuild much of the town after a devastating Texas Hill Country storm last year. Organizers set up two stages and the music ran constantly. In past years, Luck’s Chapel served as the smaller stage. This year, the chapel’s pews were set up as the Revival Tent stage allowing the audience greater movement while retaining the intimate-acoustic feel. Standout performers on this stage included Butch Walker, Lindi Ortega, Angel Olsen, and the Deslondes.
The big Medicine Show stage stood on Main Street and offered attendees the chance to see the up-and-coming soul sensation Leon Bridges, as well as the Heartless Bastards, Delta Spirit, Nikki Lane, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. The Heartbreaker Banquet’s finale came with an extended set from Willie Nelson and Friends. This group of bands included Lily Meola, Insects Vs. Robots (fronted by Micah Nelson), Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, and the Willie Nelson Family Band. The concert came to a close as a full stage performed the classic Will the Circle be Unbroken.
Hosted by Electric Lady Studios and Robot Fondue in partnership with Squarespace, the Heartbreaker Banquet benefited the SIMS Foundation‘s goal of providing mental health services to Austin musicians and Wholesome Wave, a national nonprofit aimed at increasing access to locally grown food.
